Google Wallet is Overhauling the Android Passes Experience
Google Wallet is rolling out a significant redesign for Android users, focusing heavily on how passes are displayed and managed. While the top portion of the app—specifically the credit and debit card carousel—remains unchanged, the area beneath it has been completely reimagined to improve organization and accessibility.
- New Grid Layout: Passes now appear two per row instead of spanning the full screen width.
- Visual Distinction: Each pass now features a themed background to make them easier to tell apart.
- Enhanced Customization: Users can reorder passes via drag-and-drop and choose specifically which ones appear on the homepage.
- Navigation Update: The floating action button (FAB) is replaced by a centered, split button for adding items and viewing more content.
A More Efficient Way to Manage Passes
The most immediate change is the shift in layout. By moving from a full-width list to a two-column grid, Google Wallet allows users to scan through their available passes more quickly without excessive scrolling. To further aid recognition, the app now utilizes themed backgrounds for individual cards, providing a clear visual cue for different types of passes.
Control over the homepage has also increased. Users can now hold and drag cards to reorder them. A new “Manage passes on home” option allows users to star or remove specific passes, ensuring that only the most relevant items occupy the main screen.
Streamlined Navigation and Search
Google has replaced the large “plus” floating action button previously located in the bottom-right corner with a centered, split button variant. This new design splits functionality into two distinct paths:
- The Plus (+) Button: This continues to lead users to the familiar “Add to Wallet” screen.
- “View more”: This opens a dedicated page that introduces a much-needed search feature. Users can now search their entire wallet for specific transactions, payment methods, and loyalty cards.
The “View more” section is further organized into dedicated areas for Transactions and Passes, with the most recent entries displayed prominently for quick access.
How to Access the Update
This redesign is currently rolling out to Android devices. While it isn’t available to every user yet, it is appearing on an increasing number of devices. To ensure you have the latest version, you should update both the Google Wallet app and Google Play services to stable version 26.15.33.

If you have the latest updates but don’t see the changes, you can try to trigger the update by navigating to the app info settings and selecting “Force stop” for Google Wallet.
Final Thoughts
This update represents a shift toward a more modular and customizable interface. By prioritizing a denser layout and adding robust search capabilities, Google is transforming the wallet from a simple digital stack of cards into a more manageable personal hub for loyalty and payment data.
