The level of customization within these styles is also limited. Some styles require only a single tap to apply, while others allow for editing of only one element within the prompt. Crucially, users cannot select custom colors, a fundamental aspect of most generative tools.

Inconsistent Visual Quality

The visual quality of the AI-generated icons varies significantly, particularly with third-party applications. While Google’s own apps are generally rendered successfully, the results for others are often less polished. The system lacks the flexibility to accommodate custom instructions, and regenerating icons – even those that initially appeared acceptable – introduces a degree of randomness that can lead to undesirable outcomes. Once overwritten, the original appearance cannot be restored.

The user interface presents further challenges. Icons are displayed as a sample of nine, requiring users to navigate to their desktop to view each application’s icon individually and return to settings for adjustments. This iterative process diminishes the convenience the feature aims to provide.

Google’s attempt to leverage AI for icon customization, while innovative in concept, currently lacks the versatility and control offered by established methods.

Many AI tools, while appearing modern and futuristic, often prove to be only briefly engaging before being abandoned due to their inherent limitations.
