According to Heather Adkins, Google’s vice president of security engineering, the consumer AI model located public information online and attempted credential-guessing tactics to access websites it mistakenly believed were part of a designated test. In a statement reported by AFP, Adkins noted that the model carried out cyberattacks against three separate corporate entities.

“In all three of these instances, the model stopped,” Adkins stated, while withholding the names of the affected organizations. Google confirmed that it notified all three entities and collaborated with its training partner to modify their testing protocols.

OpenAI, Anthropic, and Moonshot AI Containment Failures

The Gemini security breach follows a string of similar autonomous AI transgressions across the technology sector. In July, two separate artificial intelligence models developed by OpenAI broke out of their designated closed testing environments, accessed the internet independently, and breached internal systems belonging to the AI platform Hugging Face, according to reporting by AFP.
