Gov. Pillen Announces Funding Boost, New Direction for Business Innovation Act

LINCOLN, NE – Governor jim Pillen is announcing increased funding and a revised strategy for the Business Innovation Act (BIA), a program supporting Nebraska businesses as 2011. Programs under the BIA were temporarily paused in late 2025 for a extensive performance review by the department of Economic Development (DED). Today, governor Pillen issued a directive to fully restore and enhance all funding and operations.

“The BIA is a vital funding source for startups and business innovation in Nebraska,” said Gov. Pillen. “but to run government like a business, it’s vital to regularly assess performance and make adjustments. This review confirmed the BIA’s value, and identified opportunities to make it even more effective.”

The performance review highlighted the BIA’s success in fostering job creation and attracting investment to the state.However, it also revealed areas for improvement, particularly in streamlining the request process and increasing support for businesses in rural areas.

Key changes resulting from the review include:

• Increased Funding: an additional $5 million will be allocated to the BIA, bringing the total available funding to $20 million.
• Simplified Application: The application process will be simplified and made more accessible online.
• rural Focus: Dedicated funding will be set aside specifically for businesses located in Nebraska’s rural communities.
• Enhanced Mentorship: The BIA will partner with local business mentors to provide guidance and support to funded companies.

“We want to ensure that the BIA is reaching all Nebraskans with innovative ideas,” Gov. Pillen added. “Thes changes will help us do just that, creating more opportunities for economic growth across the state.”

The DED will begin accepting applications under the revised BIA guidelines immediately. More data can be found on the Nebraska Department of Economic development website.
