Estimated Ramadan Fasting 2026

The following is an estimate for the 2026 Ramadan fast based on the government, BRIN, Muhammadiyah and NU schedules.

1. Fasting Ramadan 2026 Official Version

The date for 1 Ramadan 2026 has not been officially determined by the government. However, referring to the 2026 Indonesian Hijri Calendar published by the Ministry of Religion, the start of Ramadan is predicted to coincide with Thursday, February 19 2026.

Meanwhile, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) provided information on the forecast for the new moon at sunset on 17 and 18 February 2026 as a scientific basis for determining the start of Ramadan 1447 Hijriah.

“Geocentric conjunction or conjunction or ijtima’ is an event when the ecliptic longitude of the Moon is the same as the ecliptic longitude of the Sun and the observer is assumed to be at the center of the Earth,” wrote BMKG in its report, quoted on Thursday (5/2/2026).

According to BMKG reckoning data, the new moon has not met the criteria to be observed on February 17 2026. Meanwhile on February 18 2026, the position of the new moon is above the horizon with adequate height, elongation, age of the Moon, lag and illumination fraction.

On February 17 2026, the height of the new moon in Indonesia will still be below the horizon, ranging from -2.41° in Jayapura, Papua to -0.93° in Tua Pejat, West Sumatra. Meanwhile, on February 18 2026, the height of the new moon was positive and significant, namely 7.62° in Merauke, Papua to 10.03° in Sabang, Aceh.

The elongation or angular distance between the center of the disk of the Moon and the Sun, on February 17 2026, the elongation ranges from 0.94° in Banda Aceh to 1.89° in Jayapura. Meanwhile, on February 18 2026, elongation increased to 10.7° in Jayapura to 12.21° in Banda Aceh.

The elongation value on February 18 2026 meets the commonly used crescent visibility criteria. Indonesia uses standards or criteria agreed upon by the Minister of Religion of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore (MABIMS) in determining the new moon.

The new MABIMS criteria governing the possibility of rukyat is considered to meet the requirements when the crescent position reaches a height of 3 degrees with an elongation angle of 6.4 degrees.

2. BRIN Version of Ramadan Fasting 2026

The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) predicts that the fast of Ramadan 1447 H will take place on Thursday, February 19 2026. This estimate is the same as the government.

According to the Coordinator of the KR Astronomy and Observatory of the BRIN Space Research Center, Prof. Thomas Djamaluddin, explained that there is potential for differences in the start of fasting. He predicts that the government will set 1 Ramadan on Thursday, February 19 2026.

“There will be differences in determining the start of Ramadan 1447. The source of the differences is not, as before, related to the position of the new moon, but more due to differences in ‘local new moon’ and ‘global new moon’,” he said when contacted, Thursday (5/2/2026), as reported Detik news.

Thomas assesses that the local hilal is predicted not to meet the criteria for hilal when observed ahead of the isbat session on February 17 2026.

“The Ministry of Religion and most Islamic mass organizations use the ‘local new moon’ criteria, which requires that the position of the new moon meets visibility criteria in Indonesian territory. At sunset on February 17, the position of the new moon/moon is still below the horizon. So it is impossible to rukyat (observe). So, the start of Ramadan will be on the following day, namely February 19 2026,” he explained.

Thomas further said that determining the start of Ramadan could be different if referring to the global position of the new moon. 1 Ramadan can be set on February 18 if referring to the global position of the new moon, the same as that used by Muhammadiyah.

“Muhammadiyah uses ‘global crescent moon’, that is, as long as the crescent moon meets the visibility criteria everywhere and the conjunction occurs before dawn in New Zealand, then the next day will be the beginning of the month. On February 17th the position of the crescent moon/moon meets the criteria in Alaska and the conjunction occurs before dawn in New Zealand, then the start of Ramadan is set for February 18 2026,” explained Thomas.

3. Muhammadiyah Version of Ramadan Fasting 2026

Muhammadiyah’s version of Ramadan 1 2026 has been officially established. According to Declaration Number 2/MLM/1.0/E/2025, Ramadan 1447 H starts on Wednesday, February 18 2026, which means one day earlier than the government’s prediction.

PP Muhammadiyah’s decision regarding the start of Ramadan 1447 H refers to the results of the reckoning of the Tarjih and Tajdid Councils. They refer to the parameters of the Muhammadiyah Single Global Hijri Calendar (KHGT).

4. Fasting for Ramadan 2026 according to Nahdlatul Ulama

There is no official determination as to when 1 Ramadan 2026 will take place according to Nahdlatul Ulama. Usually, they wait for the new moon monitoring team during the month of Shaban.

However, referring to the predictions of the Amanak NU calendar, it is said that 1 Ramadan 1447 H will take place on Thursday, 19 February 2026.

That is the information regarding the estimated schedule for 1 Ramadan 2026. Hopefully it is useful.
