Goyang City Secures Potato Seed Supply for Farmers

Goyang City, South Korea, has taken proactive steps to ensure a stable supply of popular potato varieties for local farmers, addressing potential shortages and supporting agricultural production. The city announced on March 13, 2026, that it successfully secured and allocated seeds for the ‘Doobaek’ and ‘Sumi’ varieties, both of which have faced supply challenges in recent years.

Addressing Seed Shortages

The Goyang City Agricultural Technology Center implemented supply and demand management measures to address the recurring shortages of the ‘Doobaek’ and ‘Sumi’ potato varieties. ‘Doobaek,’ favored for its taste and texture, often experiences seed scarcity. The city actively secured remaining supplies from other local governments, successfully fulfilling all applications for the 4,620 kg requested by farmers.

Challenges with the ‘Sumi’ Variety

The ‘Sumi’ variety faced more significant supply issues, with the planned supply reduced by approximately 45% due to unfavorable weather conditions. Demand exceeded the initial allocation by 31%, creating a shortage of around 4,500 kg. To mitigate this, the Goyang City Agricultural Technology Center collaborated with the Gyeonggi Provincial Agricultural Research and Extension Services and the Gangwon Potato Seed Promotion Agency.

Successful Supply Increase

Through these collaborative efforts, the Agricultural Technology Center secured approximately 4,000 kg more than the original supply plan of 14,300 kg, ultimately providing 18,300 kg of ‘Sumi’ seeds – 128% of the allocated amount. This ensured a stable supply for farmers despite the initial challenges.

Importance of Quality Seeds and Collaborative Efforts

Han Cheol-hee, director of the Goyang City Agricultural Technology Center, emphasized the value of using high-quality potato seeds, noting that they have fewer viruses, leading to increased yields and improved quality. He as well highlighted the importance of cooperation between the Administrative Welfare Center, local agricultural cooperatives, and related organizations in ensuring a smooth and stable supply process.

Application Process for Seeds

Farmers can apply for major crops, including potatoes, corn, and rice, through the Administrative Welfare Center in each district around the end of November each year. The city encourages farmers to apply within the deadline to ensure timely access to these excellent seeds.
