Grab Records In-Ride Audio for Safety, Not Eavesdropping

BALI, KOMPAS.com – Grab, the popular ride-hailing and superapp, automatically records the voices of users during GrabCar, GrabBike, and other services.

This is made possible by the audioprotect feature within the Grab app on both users’ and driver-partners’ smartphones.

Essentially, the microphone remains active, recording audio throughout the trip. but what exactly is being recorded? Is this safe for passengers? What’s the purpose of recording passenger voices?
