Platner Exits Senate Race Under Pressure

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner officially withdrew from the Maine Senate race on Friday. The move follows intense pressure from Democrats and a sexual assault allegation, ending his campaign to unseat Republican Senator Susan Collins.

Platner Exits Senate Race Under Pressure

Platner confirmed his exit by posting his letter to the Maine Secretary of State’s office on X. In the document, he stated, “I write to formally withdraw my candidacy for the United States Senate.”

Allegations and Loss of Party Support

The Maine Secretary of State’s office confirmed receipt of the paperwork just days after reports emerged that Platner had informed staff of his intent to leave the race. His departure follows a Politico report detailing an allegation from a former partner, Jenny Racicot. Racicot alleged that Platner forced her into non-consensual sex five years ago.

Platner has denied the claim, describing it as "categorically false."

A Compressed Timeline for Replacement

According to a news release, a convention is scheduled for July 25 to determine the replacement candidate.

The convention will consist of 601 delegates representing Maine’s 16 counties. The composition of the voting body includes:

  • 101 Members of the Democratic State Committee, who are elected by the public.
  • 500 Delegates appointed from across the state.

Maine Democratic State Committee Chair Charlie Dingman stated that the process would be conducted in rounds of voting until a candidate secures a majority. The proceedings are set to be livestreamed to ensure transparency.

A Campaign Marred by Volatility

Platner’s campaign was marked by significant volatility. After winning the Democratic primary in June with over 70% of the vote, he faced scrutiny regarding his past behavior. Earlier in the cycle, reports surfaced regarding sexually explicit text messages Platner sent to multiple women. He addressed these reports by stating that he and his wife had navigated “something hard” and suggested that voters were more concerned with his policy platform regarding healthcare and economic issues.

Additionally, Platner faced criticism for a tattoo containing Nazi symbolism. He later stated he was unaware of the historical association of the imagery and had the tattoo covered up once he learned of its meaning.
