Grasshopper Manufacture Splits From NetEase to Go Independent

Grasshopper Manufacture is officially parting ways with NetEase Games, returning to independent operations after a five-year ownership stint, according to a Wednesday announcement by studio chief executive Goichi Suda.

Grasshopper Manufacture Splits From NetEase Games

The studio reached the decision to split following thorough discussions with NetEase Games and the completion of its action-adventure title, ROMERO IS A DEAD MAN, Suda announced. Founded in 1998 by Suda, Grasshopper Manufacture originally operated independently before joining GungHo Group and later moving under the NetEase Games umbrella in 2021.

Suda stated that the studio reflected on its future after finishing ROMERO IS A DEAD MAN and wanted to deliver titles in a wider variety of styles to players worldwide. Having improved its self-publishing capabilities over the past five years, the developer now maintains a broad range of options for releasing future games.

The developer is also expanding its presence in multimedia franchises, including movie adaptations of Lollipop Chainsaw, alongside broader international market ambitions. Suda expressed appreciation for the relationship built with NetEase Games during their partnership and noted that future collaborations remain a possibility when opportunities arise.
