Green Day Announces ‘Nimrods’ Film Soundtrack and New Single

Green Day will release the soundtrack for their upcoming coming-of-age film Nimrods on July 31, featuring 22 career-spanning tracks and the new single “I’m Never Gonna R.I.P.” The film, which arrives in cinemas on August 14, follows three friends on a cross-country trip to Los Angeles, according to official project announcements.

Soundtrack Details and New Music

The Nimrods soundtrack includes a mix of established hits and new recordings. A central addition is the new track “I’m Never Gonna R.I.P.,” described as a two-minute rock ‘n’ roll song. According to the band, the collection also features four previously unreleased live recordings from the Palladium in Los Angeles, which appear within the film.

The album isn’t limited to Green Day. It includes contributions from artists such as Mckenna Grace, Ultra Q, and The Paradox. Additionally, four tracks are performed by the Analog Dogs, the fictional band at the center of the movie’s plot. The soundtrack will be available across digital platforms, CD, cassette, and various vinyl editions.

Plot and Production of ‘Nimrods’

Writer and director Lee Kirk developed the film in collaboration with Green Day, with Tim Perell serving as producer. The story centers on three friends—played by Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman, and Ryan Foust—who travel to Los Angeles under the mistaken belief that their band has secured a support slot for Green Day on New Year’s Eve.

The narrative draws inspiration from Green Day’s own history, specifically the years the trio spent living in a tour van prior to the 1994 success of their breakthrough album, Dookie. The supporting cast includes Jenna Fischer, Angela Kinsey, Fred Armisen, Bobby Lee, Sean Gunn, Mckenna Grace, Keen Ruffalo, and Ignacio Diaz-Silverio.

Development History and Casting

The project has been in development since early last year. It originally operated under the working title New Years Rev before being renamed Nimrods in April, a nod to the band’s 1997 studio album of the same name. To populate the film’s scenes, Green Day issued a casting call seeking “punks, emo, hardcore, alternative and rocker young adults” between the ages of 18 and 30.

Recent Green Day Activity

The film’s release follows a busy 2024 for the band. In January, Green Day released the album Saviors, which NME rated four stars, calling it their best work since American Idiot. On February 8, the band performed a medley of hits, including “American Idiot,” during the Super Bowl opening ceremony at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
