GSK and Shanghai Pharma Reintroduce Hepatitis B Vaccine to China
GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) is partnering with Shanghai Pharmaceutical (SPH) to bring its hepatitis B vaccine, Engerix-B, back to the Chinese market after a nearly four-year absence. The collaboration, announced on March 26, 2026, leverages SPH Kyuan Trade’s established cold chain logistics, distribution channels, and market reach to improve access to the vaccine throughout China.
Engerix-B’s History in China
Engerix-B was initially approved for leverage in China in 1994, with nearly 40 years of use in Belgium. Though, GSK discontinued supply to the country in 2022, citing changes in the market environment and adjustments to its corporate strategy. The reintroduction marks a significant step in addressing the ongoing require for hepatitis B vaccination in the region.
The Importance of Hepatitis B Vaccination in China
Hepatitis B is a viral infection transmitted through various routes, including mother-to-child transmission, blood contact, and sexual contact. Vaccination remains the most effective preventative measure. China initiated a national hepatitis B vaccination program in 1992, making the vaccine universally available to newborns by 2005. This initiative led to a substantial reduction in the population’s hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) positive rate, decreasing from 9.8% in 1992 to 5.9% in 2020 [1].
Addressing Vaccination Gaps
Despite a high vaccination rate of 99.6% among newborns, vaccination coverage remains low for individuals born before 2002, ranging from 14.7% to 33.6%. GSK data indicates that over 92% of hepatitis B infections occur in individuals over 30 years old [1]. Increasing adult vaccination rates is crucial for eliminating the disease in China.
Shifting Vaccination Landscape
China’s vaccination strategy is evolving to provide life-course immunization coverage, extending beyond childhood programs. However, improving adult vaccination willingness and accessibility remains a challenge, according to industry sources [Yicai].
Market Position and Competition
As of 2024, GSK is the world’s largest manufacturer of hepatitis B vaccines. In the Chinese market, North China Pharmaceutical and Kangtai Biological Products rank third and sixth globally, respectively [Yicai].
About Engerix-B
Engerix-B is a recombinant hepatitis B vaccine indicated for immunization against all known subtypes of the hepatitis B virus [2]. It is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals [2].
