GTA V Shrinks to 2.5GB with PS2-Era Mod – But Is It Worth Playing?

The ever-increasing size of modern video games is a common complaint among players. While sprawling open worlds and detailed graphics contribute to larger file sizes, some gamers simply lack the storage space. A recent mod for Grand Theft Auto V dramatically reduces the game’s footprint, compressing it from approximately 120GB to a mere 2.5GB. However, this significant reduction comes at a substantial cost.

Massive Sacrifices for a Smaller File Size

As reported by Notebook Check, the mod achieves its impressive compression by removing a significant amount of content. This includes missions, maps, audio, and graphical details. The result, as showcased in a post on X (formerly Twitter) by Synth Potato, is a game that visually resembles an early PlayStation 2 title. The mod essentially strips GTA V down to its bare essentials, sacrificing much of what makes the game visually appealing and content-rich.

GTA V Legacy: A PS2-Inspired Transformation

This isn’t the first attempt to bring a GTA V experience to older hardware or emulate a retro aesthetic. Similar projects, like the “GTA V Legacy” mod for PlayStation 2, have gained attention. As noted in a YouTube video from September 2024, this mod transforms GTA San Andreas with assets from GTA V, allowing it to run on the PS2. Another YouTube video from May 2025 highlights a similar mod running on the PCSX2 emulator (GTA V Legacy PS2 Gameplay | MOD). These projects demonstrate a desire to experience GTA V in different ways, but they all involve compromises.

Limited Availability and Questionable Playability

Currently, there is no publicly available download link for the 2.5GB GTA V mod. Given the extensive content removal and resulting graphical downgrade, it’s likely this mod is intended for a niche audience – perhaps those with extremely limited storage space or a specific interest in seeing how much of the game can be stripped away. The Reddit community discussed similar efforts to develop a true GTA V experience for the PS2 back in 2019 (This guy and his friends are developing the true GTA V for PS2), emphasizing that these are modifications of GTA San Andreas rather than a native port.

Is It Worth It?

The question remains: is this mod worth playing? Based on available information, the answer is likely no for most players. The substantial loss of content and graphical fidelity significantly detract from the GTA V experience. While the mod is a technical achievement, it’s unlikely to provide an enjoyable gaming experience for those accustomed to the full version of the game.
