A 240-TEU battery-electric container ship launched the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area’s first zero-carbon container route on October 13, 2026, establishing a green logistics corridor between Guangzhou and Hong Kong. The vessel, named the Suigang Dianhang 02 (also reported as the Sui Gang Dian Hang 02), departed from Nansha Phase III on 13 October carrying furniture, daily necessities, and other Guangdong-made goods destined for Hong Kong International Terminals, according to the Guangzhou Port Authority.
The newly launched service expands the “Shuttle Bus” waterborne logistics network operated by the Guangzhou Port Group. This scheduled feeder network features more than 70 inland barge routes spanning over 20 cities across the Pearl River watershed—including Guangzhou, Foshan, Zhongshan, Jiangmen, Zhuhai, Wuzhou, and Guigang—operating with a total capacity exceeding 10,000 TEU and a gross tonnage above 140,000 tonnes.
The voyage marks a step forward in regional freight decarbonization. Each vessel in the Suigang electric navigation series is designed to cut carbon emissions by more than 550 tonnes annually compared to conventional fuel-powered ships, achieving an estimated reduction of over 19,000 tonnes over its operational lifecycle, according to Seatrade Maritime.
Modular Power Packs Overcome Range Limitations
The Suigang Dianhang 02 utilizes containerized, box-shaped battery packs designed to maintain operational flexibility. The vessels adopt an integrated charging and battery-swapping system that allows power replenishment either through direct charging or via on-site battery hoist swaps using lifting equipment. This modular approach directly addresses the typical range limitations associated with electric maritime transport.
As South China’s first fleet of intelligent electric inland container ships, the Suigang series is included in a national programme for advanced green and low-carbon technology demonstration projects. The project is included in the National Development and Reform Commission program for advanced green and low-carbon technology demonstration projects.
Expansion of the Guangzhou Port Network
The deployment of the zero-carbon vessel builds upon decades of regional transport development. The Guangzhou Port Group was established in 2004 as a wholly state-owned company following the separation of government and commercial functions from the former Guangzhou port authority. Shortly after, the group launched its “Shuttle Bus” logistics brand in 2006 to handle scheduled barge traffic.
While the new route represents the Greater Bay Area’s first designated zero-carbon container route, electric container shipping has prior precedent in local waterways. In 2023, the Yuetong Zhujiang 001 was assigned to operate on the Shilong-Nansha service, laying early groundwork for battery-powered vessel deployment in the Pearl River Delta.
