Guangzhou experienced a significant boost in tourism during the Chinese New Year period in 2026, welcoming 20.1 million visitor trips and generating an estimated 20.1 billion yuan in tourism revenue. These figures represent a 9.3 percent increase in visitor trips and an 11.6 percent increase in revenue compared to the previous year, according to Guangzhou Fabu, the official WeChat public account of the Guangzhou municipal government.
A Long-Standing CNY Destination
Guangzhou has a well-established reputation as a popular travel destination during the Chinese New Year (CNY) holiday, largely due to its favorable weather conditions and rich cultural heritage. This year, the city government organized approximately 2,000 festival events designed to blend modern attractions with traditional customs, creating a unique CNY atmosphere.
Key Attractions and Events
- Bai’etan Fireworks Show: The CNY fireworks display at Bai’etan illuminated the Pearl River sky with over 150,000 fireworks. The event was broadcast live on more than 70 media platforms, attracting an online audience of approximately 12 million viewers and generating over 20 million impressions on local Weibo trending lists.
- Dawan Chicken Olympiad Carnival: Centered around the mascots of the 15th National Games, the Dawan Chicken Olympiad Carnival entertained over 60,000 visitors during the festival.
- Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Lantern Festival: Showcasing the operate of intangible cultural heritage artisans, the 2026 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Lantern Festival attracted nearly 200,000 visitors.
- Flower Markets: Traditional flower markets were held throughout Guangzhou, incorporating cultural performances and local cuisine. Notable markets included the Tianhe Flower Market Carnival and the Liwan Flower Market on Water.
Yuexiu District Celebrations
