National Guard’s D.C. Mission Continues to Enhance Safety and Security

As the D.C. safe and Lovely, Joint Task Force District of Columbia mission progresses into its fifth month, service members are demonstrably improving the quality of life for residents and visitors in the nation’s capital. Launched in August 2025,the task force comprises National Guardsmen from across the United States,working in concert with local law enforcement and federal agencies.

Supporting the District with Diverse Skills

Thes soldiers and airmen bring a wide range of skills and experiences, often balancing their military duties with civilian careers, education, and community involvement. Their presence provides a visible deterrent to crime and a rapid response capability for emergencies.

Quick Action Prevents potential Disaster

A recent incident highlights the dedication of the National Guard. Three West Virginia National Guard members – Air Force Senior Airman Brett Fries,army sgt. Devin Cantwell, and Army Pfc. Tyler E.Farley – detected smoke while on patrol along Massachusetts Avenue Northwest. Acting swiftly, they located a dryer fire in an apartment building laundry room.

“We were on patrol and thought we saw smoke, and I asked them if they smelled anything,” Fries recounted.”We stood there for a minute just to see if it happened again, and you could see it start rolling more and more out the window. So,Farley and I ran into the building while Sgt. Cantwell went to the fire station.”

Working with a resident, Fries and Farley extinguished the flames with a fire extinguisher and ensured the safe evacuation of building occupants before the arrival of D.C. Fire and emergency medical Services. Cantwell noted, “The building probably would have gone up [in flames].” Their quick thinking and decisive action likely prevented a more serious incident in a densely populated area.

Mission Impact: Statistics Through Early 2026

The D.C. Safe and Beautiful task force has made a significant impact since its inception. As of early January 2026, the task force has:

• Provided medical assistance to approximately 170 individuals.
• Reunited 12 lost minors with their families or authorities.
• Intervened in or de-escalated 99 potential altercations.
• Assisted the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department with roughly 130 apprehensions.
• Administered naloxone to reverse opioid overdoses in 50 critical cases.

Continued Commitment to D.C. Safety

The National Guard remains committed to supporting the District of Columbia as the mission continues throughout 2026.”There’s a lot of people that I’ve spoken to on the streets, and they feel safer in the area,” Cantwell stated. “We’re definitely doing good up here.”
