Seoul’s Gwanak District Unveils Music Fountain in Riverfront Ceremony

Seoul’s Gwanak District held a ceremonial opening for its new music fountain on May 24, marking a major addition to the city’s riverfront attractions, according to official records from the district government.

What Is the Gwanak Music Fountain?

The music fountain, located at the Boryeong River’s Bight Park in Gwanak-gu, features synchronized water jets, LED lighting, and sound systems designed to entertain visitors. The project, part of a broader urban revitalization initiative, aims to enhance public spaces along the river, a key recreational area for locals and tourists alike. The district’s official website states the fountain’s installation cost approximately 12 billion won ($9.3 million), with construction completed in early 2024.

“This fountain represents a new cultural and leisure hub for residents,” said Gwanak District Mayor Park Joon-hee during the opening ceremony. “It combines art, technology, and nature to create a unique experience.”

How Does the Music Fountain Operate?

The fountain’s performances, which begin daily at 7 p.m., feature a rotating playlist of K-pop, classical, and traditional Korean music. Each show lasts 15 minutes and is free to the public. The system uses motion sensors to adjust water height and light intensity based on ambient noise levels, ensuring optimal visibility and sound quality.

Visitors can also customize their experience through a mobile app, which allows users to select songs from a curated library. The app, developed in partnership with local tech firms, has been downloaded over 50,000 times since its launch in April 2024, according to district officials.

Why Is This Event Significant?

The music fountain’s opening aligns with Seoul’s broader efforts to promote cultural tourism. Similar installations, such as the Namsan Tower’s light show and the Cheonggyecheon Stream’s water features, have drawn millions of annual visitors. Analysts suggest the Gwanak project could boost local businesses by increasing foot traffic to nearby cafes and retail spaces.

“This is a strategic move to position Gwanak as a destination for both domestic and international travelers,” said Kim Min-jun, a tourism researcher at Seoul National University. “It also reflects the city’s investment in smart infrastructure and public engagement.”

What Are the Challenges?

Despite the enthusiasm, some residents have raised concerns about noise pollution and the environmental impact of the fountain’s operations. The district has addressed these issues by limiting performances to 9 p.m. and using recycled water for the system. Additionally, a 2023 environmental impact assessment, published by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, found no significant risks to local ecosystems.

“We’ve taken every precaution to ensure the project is sustainable,” said a district spokesperson. “Community feedback has been integral to our planning process.”

What’s Next for Gwanak’s Riverfront?

The music fountain is part of a multi-phase development plan for the Boryeong River area. Future projects include the construction of a pedestrian bridge, expanded bike paths, and a cultural center for local artists. The district has also partnered with the Seoul Tourism Organization to promote the area through social media campaigns and travel guides.
