Gwangju Shinsegae has launched a sustainable resource circulation initiative by upcycling discarded insulated delivery bags into eco-friendly safety keychains for local students, according to company announcements. The retail company collected the single-use cooling bags over a month-long period, transforming them into 2,100 functional items designed to improve pedestrian safety.
Upcycling Cooling Bags Into Student Safety Gear
According to Gwangju Shinsegae, the initiative repurposes insulated delivery bags typically discarded after national holidays. Following collection, the materials undergo a thorough washing and reprocessing phase to ensure durability and utility.
The resulting items—dubbed “environment-conscious safety keychains”—serve a practical purpose for young commuters. The company distributed an initial batch of 200 keychains to students at Gwangju Girls’ High School, with plans to supply an additional 1,900 keychains to female high school students across the Seo District.
Expanding Corporate Sustainability and Regional Partnerships
The safety keychain project involves direct collaboration with regional social enterprises and small-to-medium-sized businesses, expanding local economic ties alongside environmental protection. Gwangju Shinsegae CEO Lee Dong-hoon noted that the firm continues to focus on eco-friendly upcycling activities aimed at reinforcing win-win management strategies that benefit both the community and the environment.
This project builds on a series of similar environmental programs executed by Gwangju Shinsegae in recent years:
- 2023 Uniform Benches: Expired employee uniforms from Shinsegae department stores nationwide were collected, shredded, and compressed under high heat to manufacture sturdy public benches installed in Gwangju children’s parks.
- 2023 Waste Cooking Oil Recycling: Used cooking oil from the department store’s food market was converted into recycled soap and hand sanitizer, then donated to the Gwangju Federation of Environmental Movements and Beautiful Store.
- 2024 Campaign Banner Umbrellas: Discarded banners from local election periods were upcycled into children’s safety umbrellas featuring the school zone speed limit of 30, translucent fabric, and reflective strips.
Through these continuous upcycling campaigns, Gwangju Shinsegae aims to address environmental conservation while simultaneously supporting job creation for vulnerable local populations.
