Hamme Beer Discount: 10% for Young People Using Youth Center Lockers

Youth Center Offers discount for Phone-Free Time

A youth center in Hamme, Belgium, is trying a new approach to encourage face-to-face interaction among young people. ‘t Klokhuis youth center now offers a 10 percent discount on drinks to anyone who voluntarily locks their smartphone in a provided locker.

The center noticed a decline in conversation and genuine connection among visitors. They observed that while young people were physically present, they frequently enough remained absorbed in their phones, leading to less interaction.”In recent years, there’s been less and less discussion at the table,” a representative from ‘t Klokhuis explained. “Young people are together, but not really together.we want to encourage them to really engage with each other again.”

The initiative aims to create a space where young people can disconnect from their digital devices and reconnect with each other. It’s a simple incentive – a small discount – but the hope is it will make a big difference in fostering more meaningful social interactions. The center believes that by reducing screen time, they can help young people build stronger relationships and improve their dialog skills.

This approach highlights a growing concern about the impact of smartphone use on social development and mental well-being. While smartphones offer many benefits, they can also contribute to feelings of isolation and hinder the development of essential social skills. ‘t Klokhuis’s experiment offers a practical solution to address this issue within their community.
