Mobile Unit Expands Access to Opioid Treatment in Hampton Roads
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – March 2, 2026 – The Hampton & Peninsula Health Districts (HPHD) and the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board (HNNCSB) are collaborating to increase access to medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for individuals struggling with opioid use disorder through a new mobile unit.
Bringing Treatment Directly to the Community
The HNNCSB’s Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) Mobile Unit provides evidence-based medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) directly to individuals in demand. The unit also connects clients with crucial behavioral health support services. Individuals can receive medical assessments and prescriptions for MOUD from the mobile unit and then fill those prescriptions at any local pharmacy. HNNCSB aims to eventually dispense MOUD directly from the mobile unit.
Mobile Unit Schedule and Location
The MAT Mobile Unit operates every Monday and Thursday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM in the back parking lot of the Peninsula Health Center, located at 836-A J Clyde Morris Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601.
Comprehensive Services Offered
HNNCSB staff screen, assess and assist individuals experiencing a range of behavioral health concerns, linking them to appropriate treatment and recovery support services. These services include HNNCSB’s facilities and other health services available at the HPHD’s Peninsula Health Center.
Harm Reduction Support from HPHD
HPHD supports the mobile unit by providing opioid prevention kits, including drug testing strips, and referrals from its Comprehensive Harm Reduction program. This program offers:
- Peer recovery services
- Drug testing strips
- Narcan (naloxone)
- Syringe exchange
- Wound care and hygiene items
