Hanwha Eagles Suffer Crushing Defeat to Chiba Lotte Marines in Okinawa Exhibition

The Hanwha Eagles faced a significant setback in their Okinawa training camp, suffering a lopsided 0-18 defeat against Japan’s Chiba Lotte Marines in a practice game held on February 22nd at Itoman Nishizaki Stadium in Okinawa, Japan. This loss marks the Eagles’ second consecutive defeat in exhibition play during their Okinawa camp.

Early Game Stalemate, Late-Game Collapse

The game remained scoreless through the first three innings, indicating a competitive start for both teams. Hanwha’s starting pitcher, Wilkel Hernández, demonstrated promising form, allowing only two hits and recording two strikeouts across two innings of play. Reliever Eom Sang-baek similarly contributed with a scoreless inning.

However, the Hanwha pitching faltered dramatically after the initial innings. Yoon San-heum, entering the game in the fourth inning, was unable to contain the Marines’ offense, conceding three hits, one home run, two walks and five runs in just two-thirds of an inning. Cho Dong-wook, who followed, also struggled, allowing six hits, one walk, and five runs in one-third of an inning.

The fifth inning saw further struggles for Hanwha, with Kim Jong-soo giving up seven hits, including a home run, two walks, and eight runs in a single inning. While Park Jun-young and Kim Seo-hyun managed to limit the damage in the sixth and seventh innings, allowing a combined three hits and one walk with no runs, the early deficit proved insurmountable.

Hernández’s Strong Performance Amidst Team Struggles

Despite the team’s overall performance, starting pitcher Hernández showcased a strong outing, reaching a fastball speed of 152 km/h. He utilized a mix of fastballs, curves, and change-ups in his two innings pitched.

Batting Lineup Struggles and Upcoming Match

Hanwha’s batting lineup also faced challenges, with rookie outfielder Oh Jae-won managing only one hit in three at-bats. Jonathan Peraza was the only Hanwha player to record multiple hits, going 2-for-3.

Prior to the game against Chiba Lotte, Hanwha had faced the Korean national team on February 21st, losing 2-5 after a three-run home run by Hwang Jun-seo.

The Hanwha Eagles are scheduled to play another practice game against the Korean national baseball team at Kadena Stadium in Kadena, Okinawa Prefecture on February 23rd.
