Best-selling author Harlan Coben revealed on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs that he experiences persistent imposter syndrome regarding his extensive literary catalog, stating that he believes only poor writers possess genuine self-belief. The 64-year-old novelist, whose thriller books have spawned multiple high-profile screen adaptations, discussed his creative process and self-doubt with host Lauren Laverne.

Coben addressed the apparent contradiction between feeling inadequate and maintaining the confidence to ask readers for both their money and their time. Coben told Laverne that only bad writers think they are good.
“We all have a little bit of that imposter syndrome, and what’s interesting is it sounds like a paradox, but it’s not,” Coben said. He elaborated on the duality of his internal monologue, explaining that while he frequently believes his drafts are terrible, he simultaneously possesses the confidence to expect readers to invest hours in his storytelling.

Defining the Novel of Immersion Over the Traditional Thriller
Rather than relying strictly on genre conventions associated with crime fiction, Coben prefers a different classification for his published works. He characterizes his stories as novels of immersion rather than standard crime or thriller titles. His goal is to write a book that keeps readers engaged late into the night, turning pages long past their intended bedtime.
“I want my novel to be the one you take to bed tonight, it’s 11 o’clock, ‘I’m just going to read for 10 minutes’, and the next thing you know, it’s four in the morning, and you’ve been reading,” Coben explained.

Coben Chooses Music and Prepares The Woods for Netflix
During the broadcast, the author selected three specific musical tracks for his hypothetical desert island stay: Bruce Springsteen’s Thunder Road, Ain’t Nobody by Rufus And Chaka Khan, and Teddy Swims’ The Door. Beyond his radio appearance, Coben’s literary footprint on streaming platforms continues to expand following previous adaptations like The Stranger, Fool Me Once, and Safe on Netflix.
Production momentum remains steady as The Woods prepares to become the next adaptation in his ongoing partnership with Netflix. Scheduled for release next year, the project features former Coronation Street actress Michelle Keegan in the cast.
