From January 4th to 9th, educators and environmental enthusiasts from across France convened in Levier, in the haut-Doubs region, for the national “Sortir!” (Get Out!) gathering. Organized by FRENE, the French network for environmental education, alongside Graine Bourgogne Franche-Comté and CPIE Bresse du Jura, the event aims to revitalize and promote education within and about nature for all ages [[1]].
The Growing Disconnect from the Natural World
The six-day event centers around immersive experiences – walking, cooking outdoors, stargazing, and connecting with local communities – all designed to foster a deeper relationship with the surroundings. However, organizers acknowledge a growing challenge: a widening gap between people and nature.
“We are increasingly distanced from nature due to urbanization, screen time, regulations, and even fear of accidents,” a joint statement from the partnering associations explained. “These factors hinder our connection with the outdoors,a connection vital for our well-being and our understanding of the world.”
Workshops and a Plan for Action
Participants engaged in eight workshops covering diverse themes, including tracking wildlife like lynx and wolves, exploring the hidden world beneath the earth’s surface, understanding the stories held within trees, and practicing self-sufficiency in natural settings.
The ultimate goal of “Sortir!” is to develop a comprehensive action plan to strengthen environmental education initiatives throughout France. This plan will focus on practical strategies to encourage more people to experience and learn from the natural world.
Why Environmental Education Matters
Environmental education is increasingly recognized as crucial for fostering environmental stewardship and promoting lasting practices. By connecting individuals with nature, these programs aim to cultivate a sense of obligation towards the planet and inspire action to protect it.
