Operating under the Martí-inspired premise «Leer es Crecer» (Reading is Growing), the upcoming 2026 edition marks a significant cultural gathering amidst challenging economic circumstances. According to the ICL and the organizing committee, maintaining the event serves as a testament to the essential nature of culture. Juan Rodríguez Cabrera, president of the ICL, stated in a press briefing that organizing the fair requires a massive effort from editors, translators, writers, and promoters to deliver a successful event during exceptionally complex times.
Tributes to Fidel Castro, Marylin Bobes, and José Bell Lara
The 2026 festival will commemorate the centenary of the birth of former Cuban leader Fidel Castro Ruz (1926–2016), highlighting his vision for widespread access to literature. Alongside this historical focus, according to the organizing committee's announcement, the fair will honor prominent Cuban cultural figures.
Russia as Guest of Honor and Literary Offerings
The Russian Federation takes center stage as the guest of honor for the 34th edition. Víctor Víctorovich Koronelli, the Russian ambassador to Cuba, announced that his country’s delegation aims to showcase Russian literature, cinema, music, and art. According to Iyaimi Palomares, director of the Cuban Book Fair Chamber, the program features approximately 1,500 books and a special selection of works by Russian authors, some of whom will travel to Havana to engage directly with readers. Furthermore, the Russian embassy is coordinating with various Latin American embassies to supply Spanish-language translations alongside original editions. Cuban publishing houses are also working to integrate classical and contemporary Russian titles into distinct catalogues while reprinting the popular “Biblioteca del pueblo” series, which includes several Russian texts.

Beyond traditional print distribution, organizers are emphasizing digital formats to help navigate production challenges. The integration of e-books, digital publishing platforms, and online promotional channels allows organizers to reach broader audiences across Cuba. Rather than replacing physical books, digital alternatives aim to bridge distribution gaps, making classic and contemporary titles accessible to readers regardless of geographic or material limitations.
