Hawaiʻi Reports Ninth Travel-Related Dengue Case of 2026 on Oʻahu

Health officials in Hawaiʻi reported a new travel-related dengue virus case on Oʻahu, bringing the statewide total to nine cases in 2026. The affected individual was exposed to the virus while traveling internationally in a Pacific Island region where dengue is common. The Hawaii Department of Health stated that the patient had no connections to prior cases.

State Officials Implement Mosquito Control Measures

Following the diagnosis, response teams deployed mosquito-control measures in the affected area, though health officials did not disclose the specific location to the public. The Hawaii Department of Health noted in a news release that transmission risks remain low due to the circumstances surrounding the exposure. Hawaiʻi is home to Aedes mosquitoes capable of carrying the virus, but dengue is not endemic to the state, keeping all current infections limited to incoming travelers.

Recent Rainfall Highlights Standing Water Risks

Heavy rainfall over the past week prompted health authorities to urge residents to eliminate standing water around properties. Removing standing water prevents mosquito breeding grounds and lowers the threat of local vector-borne disease transmission. Out of the nine total cases documented in the state this year, seven occurred on Oʻahu, one on Maui, and one on Kauai, with every single instance involving travel to Pacific Island countries and territories.

Global Exposure Regions and Affected Travel Hubs

Dengue remains a year-round risk across tropical and subtropical regions globally, including parts of Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Central and South America, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Micronesia, Palau, and the Marshall Islands. Several international destinations report elevated numbers of dengue among returning United States travelers, including Costa Rica, Cuba, Malaysia, the Marshall islands, Panama, Vanuatu, and Vietnam.
