Vietnam Launches 2026 “Labor for Health Promotion and Legal Consultation” Initiative to Protect Workers’ Rights

The Vietnam General Confederation of Trade Unions (VCTU) launched the “Labor for Health Promotion and Legal Consultation – For a Healthy Vietnam” program on June 21, 2026, in Ho Chi Minh City, aiming to enhance healthcare access and safeguard labor rights, according to a statement from the VCTU. The initiative, organized in collaboration with the Vietnam Young Doctors Association and the Vietnam Bar Association, targets over 2,000 workers, prioritizing those in high-risk environments, women, and migrant laborers.

Under the program, participants received free medical examinations, including comprehensive clinical tests and imaging, as outlined by the Ministry of Health. The initiative also provided consultations on nutrition, mental health, occupational safety, and disease prevention, according to a VCTU press release. Health data was integrated into the national VNeID electronic health records system, enabling long-term monitoring, the statement added.

Legal support was a core component, with the Vietnam Bar Association offering free consultations on labor laws, social insurance, and workplace safety. The program emphasized interactive sessions to help workers understand and assert their rights, as reported by the VCTU. “This initiative addresses gaps in labor protection by combining healthcare and legal resources,” said a VCTU spokesperson.

Alignment with National Policies

The program aligns with two key Vietnamese government directives: Resolution 72-NQ/TW (September 9, 2025), which emphasizes strengthening public health, and Directive 58-CT/TW (January 10, 2026), focusing on political education and labor rights. It also implements resolutions from the 14th VCTU Congress, which called for expanded worker welfare programs.

Vietnam's Curious Situation with Labor Unions

Earlier in 2026, a similar event in Bac Ninh Province highlighted the government’s push to improve labor conditions, according to the Vietnam News Agency. The June 21 event built on that momentum, expanding coverage to urban workers in Ho Chi Minh City.

Additional Worker Support and Future Goals

Organizers distributed 100 gifts to workers in vulnerable situations and conducted outreach to dormitory areas, as noted in the VCTU report. The initiative also included cultural activities and legal awareness campaigns, aiming to foster collaboration between trade unions, local governments, and businesses.

“This program sets a model for integrating health and legal services to empower workers,” said a representative from the Vietnam Young Doctors Association. The VCTU plans to expand the model nationwide, citing the need for a “healthier, more skilled workforce” to meet economic development goals, according to the organization’s statement.

The event underscores Vietnam’s ongoing efforts to balance industrial growth with labor welfare, as the country seeks to attract foreign investment while addressing domestic workforce challenges.
