Heat 2 Cast Confirmed: Stephen Graham Reveals Roles for Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale

Actor Stephen Graham confirmed the core cast and character assignments for the upcoming adaptation during an appearance on the UK radio show Heart Breakfast. Graham stated that Leonardo DiCaprio will star as Chris Shiherlis, the skilled bank robber originally portrayed by the late Val Kilmer in the 1995 film. Christian Bale takes on the role of detective Vincent Hanna, the character made famous by Al Pacino. Meanwhile, Stephen Graham confirmed he will play Neil McCauley, the career thief originally played by Robert De Niro.

Michael Mann returns to direct the project, which is currently in development with an expected release date in 2027. Filming on the crime thriller is scheduled to begin soon.

Plot Structure and Timeline

The narrative structure of Heat 2 spans multiple time periods, following its core characters across the years surrounding the events of the original film. Describing the premise, Graham explained that the story functions as a sequel before shifting backward in time.

“It’s a sequel, and then it flashes back to a prequel,” Graham told Heart Breakfast. “So, in the sequel, if you remember the film, the last one that survived was Val Kilmer.”

The non-linear storyline explores the past history of the criminal underworld and law enforcement operations depicted in the original 1995 release. Reflecting on his involvement in the major studio production, Graham admitted that stepping into the role comes with intense pressure. “Yeah, it’s mental! I’m really looking forward to it. Fear and excitement live in the same place. There is a little bit of fear, which is healthy,” he said.
