France is finally catching a break from severe heat as temperatures begin a steady descent across the south and west of the country, according to Météo-France. After a scorching weekend that pushed thermometers to 39°C in Toulouse and parts of the Languedoc, national weather authorities confirmed that remaining orange heatwave alerts will expire across all mainland departments by Tuesday morning.
Heatwave Alerts Lifted as Temperatures Drop
Sunday’s peak saw extreme conditions hit the southwest, with Toulouse registering 39°C (Haute-Garonne). By Monday afternoon, however, cooler air began pushing into the western regions, dropping daytime highs to between 25°C and 30°C along the Atlantic coast and northwest, while the interior and southwest hovered between 30°C and 33°C.
Despite the broader cooling trend, lingering heat persisted on Monday in the southeast. Météo-France reported that areas stretching from Languedoc to the Rhône Valley saw afternoon peaks reach 35°C to 38°C, with localized spikes touching 39°C. Seven departments—including the Alpes-Maritimes, Bouches-du-Rhône, Isère, Lozère, Pyrénées-Orientales, Rhône, and Var—were placed under yellow heatwave alerts on Monday, alongside ongoing orange warnings in the Aude, Hérault, Gard, Ardèche, Drôme, and Vaucluse.
Regional Forecast and Mid-Week Outlook
Tuesday brings a more noticeable retreat in temperatures nationwide, though the southeastern quarter will remain warm. Montpellier is expected to drop to 29°C, while Toulouse sees daytime highs ease to 32°C, Montauban to 31°C, and Albi to 33°C. In contrast, parts of the southeast will still reach 35°C to 37°C before cooler Atlantic air fully takes over.
By Wednesday, nearly all of southern France will experience a return to sub-30°C conditions. Météo-France forecasts comfortable mid-week highs dropping to 24°C in Toulouse, Montauban, and Carcassonne, 25°C in Albi, 28°C in Montpellier, and 27°C in Nîmes.

This early September temperature drop follows an intensely prolonged summer across France. The late-August heatwave followed closely on the heels of the year’s third major heatwave, which ran from July 28 to August 19. According to Météo-France data, that late-summer heat event equaled the length of France’s longest recorded heatwave—originally set in July 1983—while delivering an even higher overall intensity.
