Japan Snow Deaths: February 2026 Update

Harsh winter conditions and related accidents across Japan have resulted in 27 fatalities over the past two weeks, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA). the period between January 19th and February 2nd,2026,saw a notable number of incidents attributed to heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures.

Niigata Prefecture, along the Sea of Japan coast, has been the hardest hit, reporting 12 deaths. Akita Prefecture in northern Japan recorded six fatalities, while Hokkaido, the northernmost prefecture, experienced three deaths. Aomori Prefecture reported two deaths, and single fatalities occurred in iwate, Yamagata, Nagano, and Shimane prefectures.

Recent incidents in Niigata included two men who were swept away by a current while clearing snow on February 1st. Other deaths were attributed to falls from roofs while performing snow removal, and individuals experiencing sudden health issues while working outdoors or during breaks.

Along with the fatalities, a total of 290 peopel have sustained injuries, some severe, due to snow-related accidents. These injuries range from fractures sustained in falls to hypothermia and other cold-related illnesses.

The FDMA is urging residents in affected areas to exercise extreme caution, notably when removing snow from roofs, and to be aware of the risks of hypothermia and other cold-weather hazards. Local authorities are also advising people to avoid needless travel and to check weather forecasts before venturing outdoors.
