Heavy traffic expected at Singapore’s land checkpoints during Labour Day long weekend The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) has warned of heavy traffic at both Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints during the upcoming Labour Day long weekend, from April 30 to May 3, 2026. Travellers are advised to plan their journeys ahead, consider travelling during non-peak hours, and check real-time traffic conditions before departure. This forecast follows the recent Good Friday long weekend from April 3 to 5, 2026, during which more than 1.4 million travellers crossed the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints. Traffic peaked on April 4, 2026, with over 498,000 travellers recorded in a single day. During peak hours, car travellers experienced waiting times of up to three hours for immigration clearance due to traffic tailbacks from Malaysia. To help ease congestion, ICA encourages travellers to use QR codes for immigration clearance, which have contributed to increased clearance rates by over 35 per cent during departure peak periods compared to pre-COVID levels in 2019. The authority also recommends travelling during early mornings or late evenings to avoid peak crowds. ICA has maintained heightened security checks on arriving travellers, cargo, and conveyances at all checkpoints since February 28, 2026, in response to the tense global security situation, particularly developments in the Middle East. Travellers are reminded to cooperate with ICA officers, observe traffic rules, maintain lane discipline, and avoid queue-cutting, which disrupts traffic flow and may result in being sent to the back of the queue. During the Good Friday long weekend, 18 motorists were caught committing traffic-related offences and engaging in dangerous road behaviour, with actions taken including referral to the Traffic Police and bans from entering Singapore. For the most current traffic updates at the checkpoints, the public can refer to ICA’s official channels or trusted news sources. Planning ahead and travelling outside peak hours remain the most effective ways to ensure smoother immigration clearance during the Labour Day long weekend.
