Helen Haines in critical condition after alleged targeted car attack

A Toyota LandCruiser allegedly struck Independent Member for Indi Dr. Helen Haines twice outside her electorate office in Wangaratta on Monday afternoon. Dr. Haines, 65, remains in critical condition at Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital after undergoing surgery overnight. The incident occurred at approximately 3:00 p.m. while Dr. Haines was at the boot of her car; according to eyewitness accounts relayed by government ministers, the driver passed her, performed a U-turn, struck her, reversed, and hit her a second time. Dr. Haines’ husband, Phil, and their children, Georgia, Nick, and Will, have been at her bedside.

Federal Charges and Court Appearance in Wangaratta

Brendan Nugent, 43, of Tarrawingee, was taken into custody at the Wangaratta police station following the incident. Nugent has been charged with dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and the federal crime of harming a public official. That federal charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. Victoria Police stated they will allege the incident was targeted. Nugent is scheduled to appear in a Wangaratta court on Wednesday.

Bystander Intervention Outside the Electorate Office

Local barber Ricky Jefferies interrupted the attack after hearing a loud bang and rushing outside to find the vehicle. He removed a knife from the driver’s possession before restraining him until police arrived. While public tributes have hailed Jefferies as a hero, he told reporters he was simply acting to prevent further harm and that others at the scene also provided critical assistance. Jefferies recounted that he felt compelled to act, stating, “I just wasn’t comfortable with his movements and so I basically just took it out of his pocket and threw it away.” He added that his primary concern was preventing further injury, noting, “I just leant over him.”

Counter-Terrorism Task Force and ASIO Probe

Victoria’s counter-terrorism task force is investigating the incident alongside federal police and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO). Authorities have not yet identified a motive, but Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated the act appeared deliberate. “This wasn’t something with a car just going off the road, this is something that is very clear was aimed at causing harm to Helen Haines,” Albanese told News24. ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess noted the attack occurred within an environment of increased polarization and grievance. Federal records show reports of harassment and threatening behavior toward high officeholders rose to 1,067 in the 2025-26 financial year, up from 951 the previous year. AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett stated the event appears to be an isolated incident with no known enduring threats.

Surgeons Fight to Save Remaining Leg

Dr. Haines lost one leg in the incident, and surgeons at The Alfred hospital in Melbourne are working to save the other. Victoria Police Acting Superintendent Ashley Mason stated on Tuesday that there was no recent evidence the suspect was on the radar of authorities before the attack occurred. State Nationals MP Tim McCurdy confirmed he had interacted with Nugent previously, describing the suspect as “non-aggressive” and noting, “He wasn’t threatening to any of our staff.”

Community Holds Vigil for Helen Haines

The attack has drawn condemnation from across the political spectrum, with colleagues describing Haines as a dedicated and respected representative. A vigil was held in Wangaratta on Tuesday as locals gathered to show support for the MP. In a statement, the family of the accused, Rod Nugent and Christine Cunningham, expressed their devastation, noting that Haines had been a family friend for over two decades. “What happened to her yesterday is devastating and unfathomable,” they said. “We would like to sincerely thank members of the local community and police who came to Helen’s aid yesterday after the shocking and horrific crime.”

A Call for Political Reflection

Prime Minister Albanese remarked that the tragedy highlights a need to address the increasingly heated and personal nature of Australian political discourse. “It’s important in a democracy that people are allowed to have disagreements,” he stated. “But that doesn’t mean that you have to draw into question people’s motivations or their patriotism or who they are.” Jefferies echoed the community’s sentiment regarding the MP, stating, “She’s a mother, she’s a member of the community and no-one’s job should put them at risk, but I can tell you from my own personal dealings that she is a genuine, kind person.”
