The Hellenic Police confirmed that officers in Attica are using mobile phones to coordinate operations after the Tetra radio system at the GADA Operations Center went offline.
The Tetra system failure has left frontline units without secure radio communications
According to a report in the newspaper «Καθημερινή», the breakdown has resulted in a «silence on the airwaves», preventing first-response units from communicating securely via radio with the GADA Operations Center. The maintenance contract for the Tetra system was not renewed, and for approximately the past two years, police and the Ministry of Citizen Protection have relied on temporary solutions while awaiting a major project to create a full communications system.
The Hellenic Police state that operational capability remains unaffected despite the reliance on mobile phones
In a statement, police headquarters said that operational functioning, coordination of forces, and incident management continue normally and without any impact on operational capacity. Police forces are carrying out their duties smoothly using available communications means according to foreseen procedures, with full adequacy and continuous operational readiness. The Hellenic Police remain operationally present and effective, ensuring immediate response and citizen safety in every case.
