The research team cultivated P. sanguinis and extracted its metabolites. Using a combination of spectrometry, isotope labeling, and computational analysis, they identified 12 distinct indole compounds, six of which had never been previously reported. Indoles are a class of chemical compounds known to have diverse biological activities.

To assess their potential impact on skin health, the team tested each metabolite on cultured human skin cells stressed by exposure to reactive oxygen species (ROS).ROS are unstable molecules that contribute to inflammation and collagen breakdown – key processes in skin aging.

Three of the 12 indole compounds, including two newly identified ones, showed notable protective effects:
