Rugby Stars Launch Exclusive New Whisky Expression with Against the Grain Spirits
Against the Grain (ATG) Spirits, founded by international rugby players Pierre Schoeman and Duhan van der Merwe, has unveiled its most exclusive whisky yet: the Hirundine 38-Year-Old Speyside Single Malt. Limited to just 15 individually numbered bottles, this release marks the inaugural edition of the brand’s “1st XV” – an exclusive club for collectors and a nod to the founders’ rugby heritage.
From the Pitch to Premium Spirits
Schoeman and van der Merwe launched ATG Spirits two years ago, built on a philosophy of prioritizing quality and purpose. The brand champions brands with a commitment to craft and doing things “the right way, not the easy way.” Last year, ATG introduced the Hirundine 12-Year-Old, a Single Malt from Speyside, named after the migratory swallow and swift families that travel between South Africa and the UK.
A Journey Mirrored in Spirit
Duhan van der Merwe, Scotland’s record try-scorer and a standout player on the 2025 British & Irish Lions tour, embodies the brand’s drive for excellence. His own journey from South Africa to Montpellier, Worcester, and Edinburgh Rugby mirrors the travels of the Hirundine bird. Pierre Schoeman, known for his distinctive mullet and passionate play, has become a fan favorite since joining Edinburgh in 2018 and also represented the British & Irish Lions in 2025.
The Hirundine 38-Year-Old: A Rare Offering
The Hirundine 38-Year-Old Speyside Single Malt has undergone double maturation in ex-bourbon and sherry casks, followed by a finish in a First Fill PX Octave. It is presented in a heavy, high-clarity crystal decanter, sealed with a heavyweight brass stopper featuring detailed engravings.
Expanding the Hirundine Range
Following the success of previous limited releases, Hirundine 01 and 02, ATG Spirits will launch its core 18-year-old and 21-year-old Speyside Single Malts later in 2026. These will be available in premium venues including The Kitchin, Tattu, and Edinburgh Castle.
Giving Back with Every Pour
ATG Spirits demonstrates a commitment to social responsibility through its support of the Wooden Spoon Charity. A portion of the proceeds from each bottle sold contributes to shaping opportunities for children. The brand believes in a business model where “the best business is where everyone wins.”
