Hiss Golden Messenger, the project spearheaded by North Carolina-based songwriter MC Taylor, has become a prominent force in the American folk music scene. MC Taylor formed Hiss Golden Messenger following the disbandment of his previous band, The Court and Spark. [1] The project initially began as a solo endeavor, with Taylor self-releasing early recordings through his label, Heaven & Earth Magic Recording Company.

Hiss Golden Messenger’s debut album, Country Hai East Cotton, was released in 2009 in a limited edition of 500 copies. [5] The band’s international debut followed in 2010 with Bad Debt, released via Black Maps. [6]

In 2012, Hiss Golden Messenger signed with Paradise of Bachelors, releasing their third album, Poor Moon, to positive reviews. [8] The following year, in 2013, the band released Haw. [11]

Signing with Merge and Continued Success (2014-Present)

A significant turning point for Hiss Golden Messenger came in April 2014 when they signed with Merge Records. [14] Their debut album for the label, Lateness of Dancers, was released in September of the same year. [15]

Since joining Merge, Hiss Golden Messenger has released several additional full-length albums and remastered versions of their earlier work, including Bad Debt, Poor Moon, and Haw. [16]

In 2019, the album Terms of Surrender earned the band a nomination for Best Americana Album at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards. [16] The band also participated in the Newport Folk Festival in July 2021. [16]
