The initial design was entrusted to architect Patrick Keely, a prolific church designer known for his Gothic Revival style. However, Keely’s plans proved to aspiring for the available funds, and the project faced numerous delays and financial challenges.

The cornerstone was laid on October 18, 1868, but progress was slow. Keely was eventually replaced by Stephen D. Allen in 1878.Allen substantially revised the plans, creating the structure we see today. Construction resumed with renewed vigor, and the cathedral was finally completed in 1889. The total cost of construction reached approximately $800,000 – a substantial sum at the time.

Becoming a Cathedral (1950)

For nearly a century, the church functioned as Saint paul’s Church. A pivotal moment arrived in 1950 when the Diocese of Worcester was elevated to the status of a cathedral by Pope Pius XII. Saint paul’s Church was officially designated the cathedral of Saint Paul, becoming the seat of the Bishop of Worcester. This elevation reflected the growing importance of the diocese and the cathedral’s central role within it.
