the Taoiseach should tell US President Donald Trump that Ireland does not “bow down to bullies” during his upcoming Oval Office visit, according to Social Democrats leader Holly Cairns. Cairns stated that appeasement hasn’t worked with the Trump management and a more assertive approach is needed, specifically stating Ireland stands “alongside our EU allies, we are not joining the Board of Peace, and we do not bow down to bullies.”

Cairns also challenged the Coalition to hold a referendum before removing the triple lock for peacekeeping missions, stating, “Prove it. put it to the people. And let us vote on it.” She proposed bolstering Ireland’s security and increasing defence spending to maintain neutrality, including improving pay for personnel, supporting peacekeepers, and investing in cybersecurity and anti-drone technology, arguing “being neutral does not mean being defenceless.”

Regarding social media, Cairns advocated for laws granting individuals copyright over their body and voice to combat online violations and manipulation, referencing the threat of AI-generated deepfakes. She criticized the Government’s response to the Grok controversy and suggested a ban for under-16s on social media should be considered, noting the existing ban for under-13s is ineffective. She emphasized the need to address toxic algorithms that promote hate.

The party also introduced its byelection candidates, Cllr Daniel Ennis in Dublin Central and Míde Nic Fhionnlaoich in Galway West, and announced plans to field candidates in all 43 constituencies in the next election, continuing collaboration with left-leaning parties.
