Hollywood’s AI Problem: Why Audiences Are Tuning Out

Recent forays into artificial intelligence within Hollywood entertainment are facing a harsh reality: audiences aren’t buying it.From box office disappointments to critical backlash against AI-generated content, a pattern of underperformance is emerging, suggesting a growing “AI fatigue” among viewers.

Despite high-profile narratives centered around AI, films like the horror sequel M3GAN 2.0, Mission: impractical – Dead Reckoning part One, and Disney’s Tron: Ares all failed to meet box office expectations. This trend continued into 2026 with Mercy, a crime thriller featuring an AI judge, which has been panned by critics and struggled to attract ticket sales.

The issues aren’t limited to AI as a plot device. AI-generated content is also facing important criticism. Darren Aronofsky’s on This Day…1776, a YouTube series utilizing Google deepmind’s video generation technology, has been widely mocked for its “uncanny” visuals and rendering errors – notably misrepresenting “America” as “aamereedd.”

Even Super Bowl commercials aren’t immune. A Taika Waititi-directed Xfinity ad featuring de-aged Jurassic Park stars Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum has drawn criticism for its unsettling, “melting wax figure” aesthetic. These examples collectively point to a growing disconnect between Hollywood’s embrace of AI and audience reception, raising questions about the future of AI’s role in entertainment.
