Holy Cross Medical Center Expands Orthopedic Services in Taos, New Mexico

Effective March 1, 2026, Holy Cross Medical Center will assume management of the Taos Orthopaedic Institute (TOI), bolstering orthopedic care access for the Taos community and surrounding areas of New Mexico. This expansion builds upon a 25-year legacy of trusted orthopedic services provided by TOI, with surgical procedures already taking place at Holy Cross Hospital [1].

Continued Expertise from Established Physicians

Dr. Dan Guttmann and Dr. Sean Marvil, long-standing orthopedic specialists serving the region, will continue to provide high-quality care to their patients. Dr. Guttmann, Director of the Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Service at the Taos Orthopaedic Institute and Co-Director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship and Training Program, is also a Clinical Instructor at the University of New Mexico and a physician for the United States Ski and Snowboard Team [1], [2]. Their continued presence ensures continuity of care for the community.

Expanded Specialty Services

The collaboration with Holy Cross will broaden the range of orthopedic services available locally. New surgeons are being added to provide specialized care, beginning with:

  • Foot and Ankle Surgery: Drs. Robert Leland and Alejandro Miranda, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons, will offer services including total ankle replacement, treatment for sports-related injuries (ankle instability, Achilles tendon conditions), arthritis care, fracture treatment, and reconstructive procedures for flat feet, high arches, and bunions [3].
  • Hand, Wrist, and Elbow Surgery: Dr. Sean Griggs, a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon, will join in April to provide fracture care and treatment for trauma and arthritis affecting the elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand [3].

A Stronger Orthopedic Center

James Kiser, Chief Executive Officer of Holy Cross Medical Center, expressed excitement about integrating TOI, recognizing the institute’s 25+ years of trusted orthopedic care. Sue Romansky, Chief Operating Officer of Holy Cross Medical Center, highlighted the benefit of having specialized services like foot and ankle reconstruction and hand surgery readily available in Taos, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for advanced care [3].

Dr. Guttmann emphasized that Taos Orthopaedic Institute is a center of excellence for sports medicine, arthroscopy, joint replacement, and orthopedic surgery [3].
