Honda and Redwire Propose Orbital Robotics System for Commercial Space Stations
Honda announced a new robotics concept on October 1, 2026, aimed at automating research and laboratory operations aboard future commercial space stations, as reported by Universe Today. The initiative pairs Honda’s multi-fingered robotic hand with Redwire’s STAARK robotic arm and experiment locker technology to handle routine tasks in orbit, reducing demands on astronaut time. Yahoo Finance reported that the development team in Torrance, California, is engaging with industry partners to integrate the hardware for upcoming low Earth orbit platforms.
Commercial Stations Face Crew Constraints and Automation Needs
NASA plans to deorbit the International Space Station around 2030, leaving private operators such as Axiom Space, Vast, and Orbital Reef to field commercial replacements. These new outposts are designed for smaller crews of two to four astronauts, and some will face extended uncrewed periods. Universe Today noted that astronaut time is the most limited resource in orbit, consumed heavily by mundane tasks like barcode scanning and sample management. The Honda and Redwire partnership seeks to address this shortfall by automating routine sample transfers and equipment operations.
Hardware Integration Combines Reach and Dexterity
The proposed system merges two distinct technological platforms to handle dynamic objects in microgravity. Redwire is contributing its Space Technology Autonomous Agile Robotic Kit, known as STAARK, which provides an affordable and modular reaching platform. According to Yahoo Finance, recent testing demonstrates that the STAARK robotic arm can autonomously track and grasp moving items. Honda is supplying its multi-fingered robotic hand, featuring actively controlled joints, tactile sensors, and force sensing in the fingertips and palm. Tom Sladek, chief engineer of the Space Development Division at Honda Development & Manufacturing of America, LLC, stated that the robotics are focused on enabling practical operations in orbit and helping crews accomplish more in environments with fewer personnel.
Industry Presentation and Future Deployment Timeline
Honda and Redwire are meeting with commercial station developers and prospective partners at the 2026 International Astronautical Congress in Antalya, Turkey, which runs through October 9, 2026. While early commercial stations such as Vast’s Haven-1 and Axiom Space’s Axiom Station could launch as early as next year, neither company has announced a formal agreement to adopt the joint robotic setup. As commercial entities prepare to build the next generation of microgravity laboratories, competition to supply automated research infrastructure continues to accelerate.
