Honda Insight Returns as All-Electric Vehicle for Japan

Honda is resurrecting the Insight nameplate, but this time as a fully electric vehicle exclusively for the Japanese market. The new Insight, a sleek crossover-style EV, is based on the e:NS2 model currently sold in China through Honda’s joint venture with Dongfeng.

A New Generation of Insight

After three generations as a hybrid vehicle, the Honda Insight is undergoing a significant transformation. The reborn Insight will launch in Japan within the next three months, with pre-orders beginning on March 19th.

Powertrain and Performance

The Insight will feature a single front-mounted electric motor producing 201 horsepower (150 kW) and 310 Nm of torque. It utilizes a 68.8 kWh NMC battery, potentially offering a range exceeding 500 kilometers (approximately 311 miles) based on the WLTP testing cycle. The e:NS2, upon which the Insight is based, achieves 339 miles (545 km) under China’s CLTC testing standards.

Distinctive Design

The Insight boasts a modern and sporty design, characterized by arrow-shaped LED daytime running lights connected by a full-width light bar forming a distinctive “H” shape, mirrored in the rear taillights. It features flush-mounted front door handles and hidden rear door handles, contributing to a streamlined, almost fastback-like silhouette. A new Aqua Topaz Metallic II color option is also available.

Tech-Forward Interior

Inside, the Insight features a tech-focused dashboard with a 9.4-inch slimline instrument display, a 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen running Honda Connect 4.0, and an 11.5-inch head-up display. It’s the first Honda vehicle in Japan to offer an air fragrancing system and an intelligent heating system that coordinates climate control, seat heating, and steering wheel heating.

Expanding Honda’s EV Lineup

Honda’s decision to export China-built EVs to Japan marks a shift in strategy, though EV adoption in Japan remains low, accounting for less than 2 percent of new car sales. While the Insight is the first model confirmed for the Japanese market, Honda may adapt other vehicles from its Chinese e:N lineup for Japanese specifications.
