Houston: Deadly Wrong-Way Crash on Highway 6 & Clay Road

Woman Killed in Wrong-Way Crash on Highway 6 North in Houston

HOUSTON – A woman died late Sunday night after a wrong-way crash on Highway 6 North near Clay Road in northwest Houston, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Two other drivers were transported to local hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Details of the Crash

Deputies responded to the scene of the major crash around 11:01 p.m. On Sunday. Investigators determined that the woman was driving northbound in the southbound lanes of Highway 6 when her vehicle, a Chevrolet Trax, collided head-on with a Dodge Charger in the middle lane. Debris from the initial impact then struck a second Chevrolet Trax traveling southbound.

Injuries and Fatalities

The woman driving the wrong-way vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Two other drivers involved in the crash were taken to a hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, authorities said.

Ongoing Investigation

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause of the crash. As of Monday, investigators have not determined whether speed or intoxication played a role. No passengers were involved in any of the vehicles. Authorities have similarly stated that, at this stage of the investigation, no prior reckless driving history has been identified for the driver who caused the crash.

Traffic Impact

The roadway was closed for several hours while the medical examiner’s office conducted its assessment and wrecker crews cleared the vehicles.
