Houston ISD Investigates Volleyball Game Threat
Houston Independent School District is reviewing a confrontation at a high school volleyball match where an adult spectator allegedly threatened to call immigration enforcement on students’ parents, Click2Houston reported. The incident occurred during a game between Austin High School and Kashmere High School and was partially captured on mobile phone video.
“We’re gonna call ICE on your parents,” an adult said in the video recording.
Conflicting Accounts From Spectators
An Austin High mother who witnessed the altercation stated that the hostile remarks began before anyone started recording video. She reported hearing a Kashmere High parent tell a group of boys at the event to go back to Mexico.
A woman featured in the video provided a different perspective of the confrontation. She claimed that the boys heard in the footage were using profanity toward players and showing disrespect to a teacher. The witnessing mother and her daughter disputed those claims when speaking with reporters.
Demands For Accountability From Community Leaders
State Representative Christina Morales addressed the incident during a news conference alongside other local leaders. “There must be consequences. Anyone who threatens a student at a school event should be removed,” Morales said.
Roshawn Evans of the advocacy group Pure Justice called for unity between affected populations. “Black and brown communities, we have far more reason to stand together than we do apart,” Evans said.
Houston ISD Reviews Incident After Staff Intervened
The principal of Austin High School stated that campus administrators from both schools intervened as the argument unfolded. The principal added that racism and hateful remarks have no place at the school.
Houston ISD issued a formal statement confirming that campus staff stepped in during the game. The district announced it is reviewing the incident, following up with students and families, and planning to take appropriate action based on its findings.
