Czechia’s women’s tennis team captured the Billie Jean King Cup title in Shenzhen, capping a dominant summer season for the nation’s players that included Linda Noskova winning Wimbledon in an all-Czech final against Karolina Muchova and Katerina Siniakova capturing Grand Slam titles at Roland Garros and the US Open. The triumph follows a decades-long heritage of tennis excellence in the country, highlighted this summer by a commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the 1986 Federation Cup hosted in Prague.
The Historic 1986 Prague Federation Cup
In the summer of 1986, 32 nations competed for the Federation Cup at the CLTK Prague club on Stvanice island in the Vltava River, just three years before the Velvet Revolution squashed the communist regime. The tournament is most remembered for the emotional return to Czechoslovakia of Martina Navratilova for the first time since her defection to the United States during the US Open in 1975.
Navratilova’s Emotional Return and Defiance
Team USA—comprising Navratilova, Chris Evert, Pam Shriver, and Zina Garrison—defeated the three-time defending champion Czechoslovakia squad in front of a sellout crowd. Evert later described the trip and the reception received by Navratilova as one of the highlights of her career. State-backed media in Czechoslovakia had spent a decade attempting to erase Navratilova from public memory, leading home fans on the final Sunday to heavily support Navratilova over the Czech team.
Behind-the-Scenes Tensions in Prague
Reflecting on the atmosphere, former World No. 4 Helena Sukova noted that the Czechoslovakian federation was required to permit all nominated players to compete in order to host the event.
“Back in 1986, the Czechoslovakian federation was told that in order to host, they had to allow all players who were nominated to compete for their nation,” Sukova recalled in a joint interview with Hana Mandlikova. “So, it was a special thing that Martina Navratilova could come—had to be allowed to come.”
Mandlikova recalled facing immediate tensions when asked to welcome the assembled teams on court without mentioning Navratilova by name. Refusing that restriction, Mandlikova addressed the crowd in both English and Czech to express happiness over Navratilova’s presence.
On the court, Evert defeated Sukova, and Navratilova defeated Mandlikova to secure the trophy for the United States.
Honoring the Founders of Czech Tennis Tradition
The anniversary events at the Livesport Prague Open reunited Czech tennis legends including Mandlikova, Sukova, Regina Marsikova, and Andrea Holikova, offering fans an opportunity to acknowledge their contributions. The reunion also focused attention on the foundational figures behind Czechia’s sustained tennis success, notably Helena Sukova’s mother, Vera Sukova.
A Family Legacy of Court Success
Vera Sukova reached the Wimbledon singles final in 1962, achieved a ranking of No. 5, and subsequently coached the Czechoslovak national team. Under her leadership, the national squad won the Fed Cup in 1975. Her husband, Cyril Suk II, served as president of the Czechoslovak Tennis Association and welcomed Navratilova at the airport upon her 1986 arrival.
“I think it all really started with my mum,” Helena Sukova said regarding the roots of Czech tennis prowess. “The tradition is certainly there, and I think the biggest thanks go to the parents of our players. Parents can do the most good—or they can hurt the most.”
