Climate change is driving more frequent and intense droughts across the globe, fundamentally altering how infectious diseases spread among humans and wildlife. According to a review paper published August 12 in Trends in Ecology & Evolution by researchers from the University of Colorado Boulder and the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, drier conditions can unexpectedly intensify certain pathogen outbreaks even though many disease-carrying organisms depend on water to survive.
How Drought Reshapes Disease Transmission Pathways
According to CU Boulder distinguished professor Pieter Johnson and co-author Tara Stewart Merrill of the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, drought effects on disease are frequently non-linear. While water scarcity can eliminate certain pathogens, it often forces wildlife into closer contact around diminishing water sources. This crowding creates intense hotspots for parasite transmission. During a 2014 severe drought in California, shrinking ponds forced amphibians to congregate in remaining water bodies, which directly led to more severe infections and higher parasite loads among frogs, as detailed by Johnson’s research team.
United Nations reports indicate that over the past few decades, more than 77% of Earth’s land has experienced drier conditions. In the western United States, a prolonged megadrought spanning 1,200 years has drained crucial water reservoirs like Lake Mead down to roughly a third of their total capacity. Rising global temperatures make these dry spells increasingly frequent and widespread.
Amplifying Mosquito-Borne and Fungal Pathogens
Drought conditions frequently favor specific parasites and disease vectors adapted to harsh environments. According to historical findings cited by the researchers, periodic droughts in Florida increased the transmission of St. Louis encephalitis virus via infected mosquitoes. Similarly, across North America, mosquito-borne illnesses like West Nile virus and St. Louis encephalitis have grown more prevalent because dwindling water levels diminish aquatic predators, such as dragonfly larvae, that normally consume mosquito larvae.
Valley fever, a fungal disease affecting both humans and animals, spreads through contaminated dust particles that become significantly more abundant during extended dry periods.
Pathogens Vulnerable to Dry Conditions
Not every disease benefits from water scarcity. Chytrid fungus, a deadly pathogen primarily responsible for global amphibian population declines, spreads poorly under dry environmental conditions. According to Pieter Johnson, shifting climate patterns mean some infections will disappear from specific regions, while others will intensify dramatically enough to offset those losses.

“Climate change isn’t simply making Earth warmer or drier,” Johnson stated regarding the findings. “It is making droughts more variable and less predictable. That unpredictability is becoming one of the defining challenges for understanding and managing disease in natural ecosystems.”
