According to remarks made at a press screening for the film The Taiza: The Song of Beelzebub, Byun Yo-han adopted a strict regimen to shed weight for demanding scenes. Prompted by director Choi Kook-hee to lose weight for intimate and exposure scenes, Byun stated that his pre-shooting weight exceeded 80kg.
Byun Yo-han’s Weight Loss and Sobriety Strategy
To drop more than 10kg, Byun combined weight training, cardiovascular workouts, and dietary control. He specifically emphasized complete abstinence from alcohol during the production cycle. “The bed scene appears for only a few seconds, but until the work ended, I did my best to stay sober and exercised restraint with various diets,” Byun said, according to The Korea Economic Daily.
Similarly, actress Go So-young drew public attention after reporting that she reached the 40kg weight range after 16 years by largely eliminating alcohol and removing evening social appointments from her schedule, as noted by The Korea Economic Daily.
Metabolic Impact of Alcohol on Weight Gain
Alcohol directly obstructs weight loss due to its high caloric density. Pure alcohol yields 7 calories per gram, positioning it close to dietary fat (9kcal/g) and significantly higher than carbohydrates or protein (both 4kcal/g). Because alcohol contains high calories without essential nutrients, it is classified as providing “empty calories.”
Standard alcoholic beverages carry substantial caloric loads per bottle or serving:
- A 360ml bottle of soju contains approximately 408 calories.
- A 500ml bottle of beer contains approximately 236 calories.
- A 750ml bottle of takju (traditional rice wine) contains approximately 372 calories.
Halted Fat Burning and Liver Function
The human body prioritizes breaking down alcohol over other macronutrients. While the liver processes alcohol, the energy from concurrently consumed food is more likely to be stored as fat because lipid oxidation is temporarily suppressed during alcohol metabolism.
Abstaining from alcohol allows the liver to restore normal lipid metabolism and detoxification functions. Heavy drinking negatively impacts blood pressure, blood glucose, and triglycerides, while escalating the risk of fatty liver disease and other hepatic conditions.
Successful weight reduction requires pairing sobriety with structured diet and exercise routines. Compensating for alcohol withdrawal by increasing consumption of sugary foods or carbohydrates can neutralize weight loss progress.
