The Belgian Federal Public Service (FOD) Health has issued a public warning regarding the widespread misuse of disinfectant products in domestic cleaning routines. According to a 2022 user survey conducted by the agency, a significant portion of the population fails to follow label instructions, often deploying harsh biocides for routine cleaning tasks where traditional soap and water suffice.

The guidance highlights critical oversights in consumer habits, specifically noting that up to half of users ignore required contact times—the duration a product must remain wet on a surface to effectively eliminate pathogens—or rely on expired formulas that have lost their chemical efficacy. To combat these safety and health hazards, the FOD Volksgezondheid and the Antigifcentrum have launched a two-year awareness campaign titled ‘Poets Veilig’ (Clean Safely) to educate households and professional cleaning staff.
The Functional Difference Between Cleaning and Disinfecting
Understanding the distinction between routine cleaning and chemical disinfection remains central to the ‘Poets Veilig’ campaign. According to the FOD Volksgezondheid, standard domestic upkeep requires only water and soap or a mild all-purpose cleaner. These traditional agents effectively lift physical dirt and strip away a vast majority of surface microorganisms, including common bacteria and viruses.
Disinfectants, by contrast, utilize specialized chemical substances known as biocides designed to destroy nearly all remaining microorganisms.
When Disinfection is Medically Necessary
While routine scrubbing with soap and water is adequate for most environments, the FOD Volksgezondheid identifies specific high-risk scenarios where targeted disinfection becomes the appropriate choice. These exceptions include managing a contagious illness within a household, protecting individuals with severely compromised immune systems, or handling biological spills such as blood, vomit, or feces.
Additional valid applications involve cleaning pet waste, addressing mold growth—which concurrently requires resolving underlying structural moisture issues—or following explicit medical advice. Officials emphasize that whole-house disinfection is never necessary. Instead, sanitation efforts should focus strictly on high-touch surfaces where pathogen transmission is most probable, including door handles, light switches, and toilet flush buttons.
Cleaning experts advise that any necessary disinfection must be preceded by a standard physical cleaning. Accumulated dirt and grime can form a protective barrier that neutralizes the chemical efficacy of the biocide.
Safety Risks and the ‘Poets Veilig’ Campaign
Improper handling of strong cleaning chemicals carries tangible domestic risks. Data from the Antigifcentrum shows that the center received 784 calls in 2025 alone regarding accidents involving disinfectant cleaning products. Active biocide agents can cause acute irritation to human skin, eyes, and respiratory tracts, while chemical runoff entering household drainage systems presents documented hazards to aquatic organisms.
To reduce these incidents, the Antigifcentrum advises consumers to adhere to core safety protocols: always match the correct product to the specific task, read the product label thoroughly, ensure adequate ventilation during cleaning, and never mix disparate chemical cleaning solutions. Products must be stored securely and kept strictly out of the reach of children.
The newly launched ‘Poets Veilig’ campaign aims to address these risks over a two-year period through a dedicated website, social media outreach, informational videos, and blog content. Special operational focus is also directed toward professional cleaning personnel, with targeted safety guidance developed in partnership with service-voucher companies and the FOD Werkgelegenheid, Arbeid en Sociaal Overleg (Employment, Labour and Social Dialogue).
