Researchers at McGill University found that healthy young adults who completed 20 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous exercise or took a nap performed about 22 percent better on memory tests after staying awake for 30 consecutive hours compared to participants who did neither.
Study Design and Cognitive Testing Methods
According to findings from the McGill University-led research team, the laboratory study involved 54 healthy young adults who remained awake for 30 consecutive hours under lab supervision. Following this period of sleep loss, participants were assigned to one of three intervention groups: a 20-minute cycling session, a 90-minute nap, or a control condition where they received no intervention. Three days later, researchers evaluated the participants’ episodic memory by testing their ability to recall images they had viewed immediately after completing their assigned intervention. Participants in both the exercise and nap groups remembered significantly more images than those in the control group.

While the overall memory benefits were nearly identical between the two groups, brain recordings revealed that exercise and napping supported cognitive function through distinct mechanisms. Napping helped the brain recharge, which facilitated the intake and retention of new information. Exercise functioned differently by helping the brain utilize its remaining resources more efficiently without causing increased subjective fatigue. Senior author Marc Roig, a professor in McGill’s School of Physical and Occupational Therapy, noted that sleep loss impacts nearly every aspect of cognitive function, and that a brief bout of exercise helps preserve a critical cognitive ability when additional sleep is impossible.

The research provides actionable fatigue-management insights for high-stakes environments where chronic sleep deprivation is common and errors carry serious consequences, including health care, transportation, and emergency response. First author Madhura Lotlikar, a doctoral candidate in McGill’s Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, explained that because mid-shift naps are frequently impractical in demanding operational settings, accessible physical activity serves as a promising, inexpensive tool to help individuals maintain cognitive sharpness. The study authors emphasize that physical activity does not replace actual sleep, but it offers a functional countermeasure when rest is unattainable.
