Awkward Exchange on Live TV

A seemingly innocuous compliment about his age led to a tense moment between Howie Mandel and hosts Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos on their show, Live with Kelly and Mark, on Monday, March 23, 2026. The exchange quickly became awkward as Mandel pushed back against what he perceived as a backhanded compliment, according to People and Fox News.

The conversation began when Consuelos congratulated Mandel on recently turning 70. Ripa then added, “It doesn’t create any sense,” prompting Mandel to ask, “What do you mean it doesn’t make any sense?”

When Consuelos remarked that Mandel “seem[s] great,” the comedian immediately responded, “I look great? That doesn’t mean anything to me. No, no, no, no. I don’t like that, because that’s a caveat.”

“You Look Great…For 70”

Ripa attempted to clarify, stating, “We’re not saying you look great for 70. You look great,” but Mandel remained unconvinced. “Yes, you are, without saying ‘70,’” he countered. Consuelos then admitted he was implying “great for 70,” leading Mandel to reframe the compliment as an insult.

“It’s like saying you’re smart for a stupid person,” Mandel explained, as reported by Hello! Magazine.

Mandel’s Intense Workout Routine

Following the exchange, Mandel shifted the conversation to his fitness regimen, revealing a rigorous workout routine he described as “ridiculous.” He credited actor Jerry O’Connell with introducing him to the unusual exercise, which involves swimming with cables attached to his ankles and using frying pan paddles for resistance.

“I swim but have these cables which I tie onto my ankles and then I attach them to whatever is at the side of the pool,” Mandel explained. “Then he gave me these frying pan paddles, and I swim for an hour and go nowhere.” He added that he often gets “so lost in it” and even brings the equipment with him while traveling.

Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle

Mandel has consistently prioritized a healthy lifestyle, particularly after discovering he had high cholesterol. He enjoys a diet rich in vegetables and fruit, with chocolate being his only admitted weakness.
