According to Mureks’ observations, on both sides of the disc-shaped cloud, a fast-moving outflow of hot molecular hydrogen was visible. The orange highlights in this image indicate infrared light emanating from the nebula.
As the star’s light beams extend from the center, they illuminate concentric rings of gas. The rippling pattern of this gas suggests that it formed from successive bursts from stars, with small amounts of material ejected every few hundred years.
The Egg Nebula, located in the constellation Cygnus, was first discovered in 1975. Nebulae in this preplanetary phase are relatively rare. This stage only lasts a few thousand years and is often faint, making it relatively difficult for astronomers to find it.
