Starting January 1, 2027, the Hamburger Verkehrsverbund (HVV) will implement broad fare increases across its public transit network, according to official announcements from the transport association and regional reports from outlets like NDR and t-online. The upcoming tariff adjustments include higher prices for short-distance tickets, child fares, and specific multi-ring journeys, alongside the removal of the longstanding online ticket discount and the introduction of a new service fee for student Deutschlandtickets.
Fare Increases for Short-Distance and Child Tickets in Hamburg
While frequently purchased single and day tickets in the central Hamburg AB and two-ring zones will remain stable at 4,10 euros for a single ride and 8,20 euros for a day pass, other fare categories are climbing. According to the HVV, single tickets for short distances and city traffic will increase by ten cent to 2,20 euros. Adult tickets covering three rings will rise from 7,00 euros to 7,40 euros per trip, as reported by NDR.
Families will also face higher costs for children’s travel. The transport association attributes these adjustments to rising personnel and energy costs across transport companies.
End of the Online Booking Discount and Weekly Passes
Passengers will lose the seven percent discount previously applied when purchasing tickets digitally through the HVV app or online shop. The transport association stated that the digital discount was originally introduced to promote online sales channels—a goal that has since been achieved, with more than half of all tickets now sold digitally. Consequently, the association determined that separate financial incentives for digital purchases are no longer necessary.
In addition, the HVV is eliminating the weekly ticket entirely. According to regional data, the ongoing popularity of the nationwide Deutschlandticket has driven down demand for traditional weekly passes.
Changes to Student Deutschlandtickets and Social Fares
The Deutschlandticket, which recorded 1,26 million users through the HVV in June according to transit data, is also undergoing structural changes for specific groups. Students residing in Hamburg who previously received the Deutschlandticket for free will now pay an annual service charge of 19 euros starting January 1, 2027, which breaks down to roughly 1,58 euros per month.
For low-income residents receiving social benefits, the monthly social discount on transit will be fixed at 25,50 euros per ticket, representing a ten-euro reduction from previous levels, as detailed by t-online.
